What was touted as a lopsided bloodbath in the waiting between an FBS powerhouse and a lowly FCS team, looked like a top-10 battle of two disciplined teams. The No. 7 ranked Idaho Vandals gave the No. 3 ranked Oregon Ducks everything they wanted and more, but Idaho couldn't overcome a late deficit and fell to vaunted Ducks 24-14 Saturday night in Autzen Stadium.

As we continue our local high school football team preview, this morning the spotlight shines on Glenns Ferry and Gooding. The Glenns Ferry Pilots graduated just five players off of their 2023 roster, leading to optimism that the program could take a noticeable step forward this fall under second-year head coach Eric Stewart. Though the team won just two games last fall, both wins were impressive – a strong win over a Rimrock team that was in playoff contention deep into the regular season and then a conference win over Carey. Both wins came on the team’s home field just off over Interstate 84 in Elmore County. With so many players expected back, the team should be able to dive right in. Senior quarterback Landon Stewart threw 15 touchdown passes last fall and the offense returns its top rusher and receiver behind returning linemen Junior Sanchez and Oscar Duenas.

Tanner Baumann returns for his third season at the helm of the Gooding Senators. The Senators opened the 2023 campaign with an 8-0 win over Jerome and did not taste victory again for six weeks. Injuries riddled the Senator roster early in the season and made it difficult for them to recover from as the season wore on. Despite losing ten starters, Coach Baumann looks forward to having LB Brodee Greeley who missed five games last season. Greeley, who received all-conference honors as a sophomore, will need to help prevent the big play, that plagued the Senators' defense in 2023.
