๐ฐ Thursday News: Whatโs Happening Across the Magic Valley
โ๏ธ Hereโs a look at some of the biggest stories happening across Southern Idaho today.
๐ Hailey Voters Face Decision on Fire Protection
Fire protection โ and how it will be paid for โ is becoming a major issue in Hailey.
Residents can ask questions tonight at a meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Hailey City Hall about a proposal to annex the cityโs fire service into Blaine County Fire and Rescue.
The proposal will appear on the November 3 ballot. If approved, funding and oversight would shift to the fire district, with a larger share of funding coming from property taxes.
Fire officials say the current tax comparison doesn’t tell the entire story because Hailey also uses local option taxes and other revenue sources. If voters reject annexation, officials say the city would have to explore other funding options, including potentially returning to a volunteer fire model.
If approved, the annexation would take effect in October 2027. ๐
๐ก Twin Falls County Growth Debate
Growth and development are also on the agenda in Twin Falls County.
Republican Scott Tverdy and independent Kirk Tubbs, the two candidates for County Commission Seat 1, agree that the county’s comprehensive plan needs updating and that residents should have more input.
Both candidates support planning for future growth while trying to protect the area’s agricultural heritage.
Tverdy says development is necessary, but the county can’t continue expanding into farmland without careful planning.
Tubbs says the county needs to plan ahead instead of reacting to growth after it happens.
The two candidates will face voters on November 3. ๐ณ๏ธ
๐ Gooding Police Investigating Vehicle Burglaries
Gooding police believe many people who were victims of a string of vehicle burglaries in September may not have reported their losses.
The burglaries happened near the Malad Apartments around 10:30 p.m. on September 16.
Police estimate only about 10 percent of victims have come forward.
Residents are being asked to check their vehicles for missing property and review any security footage from that night.
Anyone with information is asked to contact dispatch at 208-324-1911.
Police are also reminding residents to lock their vehicles and secure valuables. ๐
๐ง Heads Up for I-84 Drivers
If you’re traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 Monday, plan for extra time.
Crews will be resurfacing the highway between Kasota Exit 201 and Burley Exit 208.
The work is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting, with single-lane closures and reduced speeds.
Drivers should slow down, watch for workers and equipment, and allow additional time to reach their destination. ๐๐จ
๐ Idaho’s Capitol Christmas Tree Coming Through Twin Falls
Here’s some holiday news โ and it’s coming sooner than you might think! ๐
This year’s People’s Tree, destined for the U.S. Capitol, will come from the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest.
And Twin Falls will get a chance to see it.
The tree is scheduled to stop in Twin Falls on November 5, following a visit to Craters of the Moon.
Thousands of handmade ornaments created by Idahoans will decorate the tree during its journey to Washington, D.C.
This will be the third time Idaho has supplied the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, following previous selections in 2003 and 2016.
The tour events are free and open to the public. ๐๐บ๐ธ
๐ฒ BLM Planning Aerial Herbicide Treatments
The Bureau of Land Management is planning aerial herbicide treatments on nearly 16,000 acres of public land in southwestern Idaho.
The work in Ada and Owyhee counties is designed to target invasive annual grasses that can provide fuel for wildfires.
Officials say the treatments will also help maintain fuel breaks and encourage the recovery of native vegetation.
The work could begin during the second week of October, depending on weather and fire activity. ๐พ๐ฅ
๐ Idaho’s Teacher of the Year
A Boise second-grade teacher received a very big surprise this week.
Amanda Holland, a teacher at Washington Elementary, was named Idaho’s 2027 Teacher of the Year.
Holland was selected from 182 nominees and received a $10,000 award.
She has spent 23 years in education and says watching her own children in their classrooms helped inspire her to become a teacher.
The award recognizes her work building a classroom community focused on kindness, empathy and thoughtful students. ๐ฉโ๐ซ๐
