SHOOTING INVESTIGATION — KIMBERLY
A suspect remains at large after a man was shot Friday night in Kimberly. Kimberly-Hansen Police Department says the victim is hospitalized and unable to assist investigators, but police believe the shooting was an isolated incident. Residents are asked to review security footage from around ten p.m. and report anything suspicious.
MARIJUANA RESCHEDULING DEBATE
Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador says he and attorneys general from seven other states oppose rescheduling marijuana. They argue science supports keeping it a Schedule One drug, citing concerns over youth use, impaired driving, and public safety, and say they’re reviewing an executive order from President Donald Trump’s administration.
MINOR EARTHQUAKE — CUSTER COUNTY
A minor earthquake rattled parts of Custer County yesterday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey reports a 3-point-2 quake near Basin Butte, northwest of Stanley, with no damage reported.
IDAHO SUPREME COURT & EDUCATION TAX CREDIT
Idaho Supreme Court will hear arguments January 23 in a lawsuit challenging Idaho’s new private education tax credit. The case targets House Bill 93’s Parental Choice Tax Credit, which offers up to 7,500 dollars for private education, with applications set to open January 15.
LEGISLATIVE RESIGNATION
Wendy Horman announced she will resign from the Idaho Legislature January fifth to take a federal role in the Trump administration. Horman, a longtime budget leader, is leaving just ahead of the 2026 session.
TRAFFIC ALERT — I-84
The eastbound I-84 off-ramp at Exit 208 closes tonight from six p.m. to eight tomorrow morning for construction, according to the Idaho Transportation Department. Drivers should follow detours through Exit 211.

Sawtooth Avalanche Center is warning of extremely dangerous avalanche conditions in the Sawtooth Mountains after more than a foot of new snow fell on a weak snowpack.
COURT VERDICT — KOOTENAI COUNTY
Paul Trouette, owner of Lear Asset Management, has been found guilty of two counts of battery following a Kootenai town hall incident. The jury rejected Trouette’s defense that he acted under direction from Sheriff Bob Norris.
HIGHWAY CLOSURE — HIGHWAY 21
Highway 21 remains closed from Lowman to Banner Summit after a rockfall. Crews expect the highway to reopen sometime later this week, weather permitting.

BOYS BASKETBALL — FRIDAY NIGHT
The Jerome Tigers ran into a tough one Friday night, falling 62-51 to Century in a non-conference matchup. It was a tight, back-and-forth first half with Century doing damage in the paint and Jerome knocking down shots from mid-range and beyond.
Around the Magic Valley in boys’ hoops, Teton topped Burley 66-56, Raft River rolled past Taylor’s Crossing 79-62, and Grace Lutheran cruised by Castleford 45-17. Butte County beat Valley 51-40, Dietrich knocked off Glenns Ferry 60-31, and Declo edged Nampa Christian 62-58. Hagerman took down Oakley 44-29, Gooding slipped past Parma 57-53, Rimrock beat Richfield 58-43, and Murtaugh held off Shoshone 39-33.
GIRLS BASKETBALL — FRIDAY NIGHT
On the girl’s side, Madison defeated Twin Falls 59-35, Salmon River beat Carey 55-43, Gooding topped Payette 59-39, Dietrich rolled Glenns Ferry 51-23, and Hagerman squeaked past Hansen 40-37.
BOYS BASKETBALL — SATURDAY
On Saturday in boys’ varsity action, Watersprings picked up a road win at Hansen, 61 to 40. Declo had a solid showing at Melba, winning 60 to 45. Canyon Ridge ran into a tough one on the road, falling to Mountain View 76 to 51. Borah edged Mountain Home 45 to 38, and in Salt Lake City at the Delta Center, Filer held off Wendell in a close one, 60 to 55.
GIRLS BASKETBALL — SATURDAY
On the girl’s side, Jerome earned a hard-fought non-conference win at Bishop Kelly, 40 to 35. Wendell took care of business at home over Declo, 44 to 25. At the East Idaho Holiday Shootout, Twin Falls squeaked past Shelley, 53 to 50. And at the Parma Holiday Tournament, Gooding rolled past Nampa, 55 to 32.
WRESTLING — WILEY DOBBS INVITATIONAL
This weekend, the Wiley Dobbs Invitational was at Canyon Ridge, with hundreds of wrestlers from 33 boys and 37 girl’s varsity teams. Friday highlights included quick pins by Buhl’s Raidyn Pugsley, Jerome standout Olivia Bezdicek, and top seeds from Canyon Ridge, Kimberly, and Oakley as championships set for Saturday.
WINTER SPORTS — POMERELLE
Pomerelle Mountain Resort is officially open after picking up up to 20 inches of snow. All three lifts are running, drawing hundreds of skiers just in time for the holidays.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL — BOISE STATE MEN
Boise State Broncos opened Mountain West play with an 81–66 road loss at Nevada. Andrew Meadow led Boise State with 16 points as the Wolf Pack pulled away in the second half Saturday night.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL — BOISE STATE WOMEN
For the ladies, Boise State Broncos dropped a road game at San Diego State Saturday, falling 83–54 at Viejas Arena. Libby Hutton led the Broncos with 14 points as the Aztecs pulled away early in Mountain West play.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL — IDAHO
Idaho Vandals picked up a thrilling overtime win on the road, edging Cal Poly 83–80. Back in Moscow, the Vandal women rolled past Western Oregon 91–63.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL — IDAHO STATE
Idaho State Bengals wrapped up non-conference play with mixed results over the weekend. The Bengal men dropped a 93–83 decision to UC Davis at Reed Gym. Idaho State finishes non-league play at 7–6 and opens Big Sky action Thursday against Sacramento State.
On the women’s side, the Bengals closed non-conference play strong, rallying past Utah Valley 59–56 on the road. Idaho State erased multiple deficits to finish 7–4 heading into conference play.
