Your Daily Briefing -12/26/2024

There is a winter storm warning in place this morning.  Heavy snow is expected in Blaine and Cassia Counties.  There is a winter weather advisory for the rest of southern Idaho including, Lincoln, Minidoka, Camas, Gooding Jerome and Twin Falls Counties.  Accumulations in the mountains could be between 4 and 19 inches and upwards to 2 feet for the highest peaks.  In the valley, expect 2 to 6 inches through tomorrow evening.

A drunk driving suspect led Cassia County deputies on a Saturday morning pursuit where authorities ended up using a PIT maneuver and stop sticks.  A deputy made a traffic stop at 6:30 after seeing a red sedan traveling in the opposite lane on U.S. Highway 30 near Freedom Park in Burley.  The chase led authorities onto I-84 and back to highway 77.

After years of sharp population growth, Idaho is now home to about 2,001,619 people.  Idaho’s population growth appears to have slowed, but the state remains among the fastest growing states.  Idaho’s population grew by 1.5% or around 30,500 people from 2023 to 2024.

Should Idaho be forced to use newspapers to publish legal notices?  With most publications mostly online, some of the Idaho Legislature is asking the question.  At a meeting earlier this month some say the notifications are of little use to the public and taxpayers shouldn’t be required to subsidize local news.  Leaders of the Newspaper Association said Publishing these notices is not about the money it’s about public transparency and openness.

County Prosecutor Sam Beus has submitted a letter to county commissioners that he will vacate his office Jan. 13 because he does not live in the county. Now the problem is that no one is stepping up to fill the position.  County commissioners could have the option to appoint someone outside the county.

The Jerome post office will be renamed to the representative Maxine Bell Post office.  Bell served in the Idaho House of Representatives from 1988 to 2018.  During her 15 terms in the Idaho Legislature, Bell also served as the Co-Chair of the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee.
