🎖 Memorial Day & Civic Events

  • Memorial Day ceremonies across the Magic Valley honored fallen heroes. In Twin Falls, Filer, Buhl, and Shoshone, veterans and community members gathered to remember those who gave their lives, with heartfelt speeches and a strong show of support from locals.
  • Tomorrow, Shelley will host Idaho’s next “Capital for a Day” event. Governor Brad Little and state agency leaders will meet with residents in Bingham County to discuss local issues and state programs during an open forum.

🍞 Community & Social Issues

  • Federal cuts to food assistance are hitting rural Idaho hard, especially in Southern Idaho, where food pantries are seeing rising demand and fewer resources. Advocates warn of growing food insecurity as USDA supplies shrink and federal SNAP changes take effect.

🚔 Crime & Public Safety

  • In Garden City, Robert Pierce was arrested after violating a protection order and attacking police. He allegedly bit an officer, kicked three others, and tried to suffocate a K-9 during the arrest. He faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.
  • A tragic accident in Pocatello: A 3-year-old girl was struck by a pickup truck in the Costco parking lot on West Quinn Road Saturday afternoon. She later died at Portneuf Medical Center.

🚗 Traffic & Infrastructure

  • A crash outside Twin Falls shut down the busy intersection at North 3300 East and East 3900 North for nearly an hour. An SUV failed to yield and hit a sedan. No one was hurt, but the driver was cited.
  • The U.S. Forest Service is cutting hours at Sawtooth National Forest offices due to federal staffing reductions. Offices in Ketchum and Stanley are closed until June 16—just as summer recreation season begins—causing concern among conservation groups.

🎓 Obituaries

  • Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa is mourning the death of 21-year-old Serena Bennett, who died during a SCUBA diving trip in Ecuador on May 18. She had just graduated Cum Laude in Wildlife Biology and was participating in a university-led academic trip.

    • Winners took home up to $1,000 each and praised the event’s strong camaraderie and competitive spirit.
  • At the Shrine All-Star Games, the South swept both matchups:
    • In the 8-man game, Valley’s Josh Hardy scored three first-half touchdowns to secure a 40-30 win.
    • Bryce Sterling of Glenns Ferry donated over $4,200 to Shriners Hospital at halftime.
    • In the 11-man game, Declo’s Gavin Rasmussen and Bode Brackenbury led early scores to edge out the North 13-10.
